Devotional: Kurios

Philippians 2
9 God has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 
11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Revelation 4
8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:
“Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come!”

Worship (Kurios)

Lord Jesus, You are my Lord and my Master
The One with all supremacy in the entire universe

Possessing all power and all authority
My sovereign Lord, Kurios

And Lord, Jesus, You are the Messiah
Lord of all, Ruler of everything

Adonai, Yahweh, name above every name
The almighty God, Kurios

Holy, holy, holy
You are the One who was and is and is to come

Jesus Christ, You are Lord and Owner of everything
I bow my knee and confess with my tongue

That You are Kurios
My Lord and my Master

A mixture of the languages of the Bible – a little Hebrew and a little Koine Greek (no Aramaic here). “Kurios” is the ancient Greek word for “lord” or “master” or “owner” and is used in both a human sense and a divine sense.

In the latter case, “Kurios”  is the New Testament equivalent for the Hebrew word “Adonai” and the unutterable tetragrammaton “YHWH” (we have added the vowels to get “Yahweh”).
